REVIEW: Dunkin' Iced Blueberry Matcha Latte and Matcha Topped Donut

Dunkin’ Donuts recently came out with a bunch of new items—including two for tea lovers. Just over a year since Dunkin’ started serving matcha lattes, they released the Iced Blueberry Matcha Latte and the Matcha Topped Donut. I was able to try both of these new items, so read on for my thoughts.

Iced Blueberry Matcha Latte

I first tried to order the iced blueberry matcha the day it came out, but the cashier had no idea what I was talking about and just gave me a regular iced matcha latte. I was able to get it a week later (ordered on the app just to be sure), and the first thing I noticed was that it needed to be mixed. Not only could you see the blueberry syrup sitting on the bottom, but the first sip tasted very strongly of blueberry.

The blueberry was definitely still the strongest flavor after I mixed it, but you could taste a hint of matcha. As always with Dunkin’ matcha, the blueberry matcha latte is fairly sweet. I don’t think this is from the blueberry flavor shot, as it supposedly unsweetened, but from the matcha itself. Blueberry is not my favorite flavor at Dunkin’ Donuts, so it wouldn’t be my first choice too add to my matcha; but, it blends well enough that it gives me confidence to try other flavors such as the raspberry flavor shot or vanilla syrup. In fact, I’ve been thinking about trying all of the different flavors at Dunkin’ in their matcha latte, and the blueberry matcha just solidified that for me. Be on the lookout for that blog post in the future.

Matcha Topped Donut

Dunkin’s matcha topped donut is literally a glazed donut topped with matcha powder. Now, I like drinking matcha, I even like baking with matcha, but I have no desire to eat straight matcha powder. Regardless, I decided to give the matcha dopped donut a try.

Most of the matcha powder fell off onto the serving paper and into the bag, and yet the first word that came into my mind when I bit into this donut was “powdery.” Next was grassy—matcha should be grassy, but this felt especially strong. I was surprised that the matcha powder was not at all sweet because I thought that Dunkin’s matcha mix had sweetener in it, but the glazed donut was plenty sweet (as expected). Personally, I think Dunkin’ missed the mark on this one. I would have preferred a matcha-flavored icing, or at least a vanilla frosted donut topped with matcha powder instead of a plain glazed donut. This donut may or may not be available for a limited time, but I wouldn’t recommend rushing to try it even if it is.

So What’s the Tea?

Overall, Dunkin’ had a mixed bag with these new releases. Personally, I wouldn’t get the matcha topped donut again, and I wouldn’t run out to get the blueberry matcha, but I would pick it up if I was out and looking for something energizing and refreshing (I felt the same about the new avocado toast, which will be included in a future review). They also released cold foam this month, which I would be interested to try on an iced matcha latte or even an iced tea. It is also rumored that they are coming out with a new Dunkin’ Refresher flavor later this month (blueberry pomegranate), and I’m definitely excited to try that.
